Why did my test email land in spam?
Test emails landing in spam is common and doesn't necessarily mean your campaign emails will.
Test emails landing in spam is a common issue that doesn't necessarily predict campaign performance. Here's how to troubleshoot:
Common Causes
-
New or under-warmed inbox: If your inbox hasn't completed warmup, its reputation is low. Check the Health Score column in your Email Accounts table - a low score usually points at warmup or sender-reputation issues.
-
Missing email authentication: SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records prove your emails are legitimate. Pre-warmed and DFY inboxes have these configured automatically during provisioning.
-
Spam trigger content: Certain words, excessive links, or large images can trigger spam filters.
-
Self-sent emails: Emails you send to yourself are more likely to hit spam folders - email providers recognize this pattern.
How to Troubleshoot
-
Check warmup status: Go to Cold Email Agent → Email Accounts and check the inbox row for:
- A green flame icon in the Warmup column (warmup running normally)
- A healthy score in the Health score column
- Status showing Active (green badge)
-
Run a deliverability test:
- Go to mail-tester.com
- Copy the test email address they provide
- Send a test email to that address
- Check your score and follow their recommendations
-
Review your email content:
- Remove spam trigger words (FREE, URGENT, !!!)
- Limit links to 1-2 per email
- Keep images small or remove them entirely
- Use personalization variables naturally (2-4 per email)
-
Verify domain authentication:
- For pre-warmed and DFY inboxes: Already configured during provisioning
- If an affected inbox shows Error in Email Accounts, click the row and use Reconnect
- If inbox rows look healthy but a warning still mentions SPF, DKIM, or DMARC, contact support with the domain name
