How do I change my workspace role from Member to Owner?
Steps to change my workspace role from Member to Owner.
You can't change your own workspace role — a current Owner or Admin has to do it for you from the Members page. Members and Clients don't see the role-change controls.
How an Owner or Admin changes your role
- Go to Settings → Members in the left sidebar.
- Find your name in the members list.
- Click the role dropdown next to your name.
- Select Owner (or Admin / Member / Client).
- The change saves immediately.
Role-change permissions
| Actor role | Can change roles? |
|---|---|
| Owner | Yes — any role to any role |
| Admin | Yes — same scope as Owner |
| Member | No |
| Client | No |
Things to know
- A workspace must always have at least one Owner. The system blocks demoting the last Owner.
- There's no "request promotion" button — promotion happens only when an Owner/Admin initiates it.
- The new role takes effect on the next page navigation. Refresh if the UI doesn't update immediately.
If the role change isn't taking effect
- The Owner/Admin's screen should show a "Member role updated" toast on success. If it shows an error, the change didn't save.
- Refresh the affected member's browser. Role-dependent menu items (like Billing for Owners) only appear after reload on some pages.
- Check that the Owner/Admin saving the change is themselves an Owner or Admin — if their own role is lower, they'd see a permissions error.
- If everything looks right but the role still isn't updating, start a chat with support with the workspace name and member email.
