Variations
Generate new versions of an existing cold email script.
The Variations tool takes an existing email script and creates fresh versions of it. This is useful for A/B testing or when you want to try different angles without starting from scratch.
Where to Find It
There are two ways to get there:
- From the Cold Email Writer page, click Create Variations From Existing Script at the top.
- Go to Resources → Cold Email Writer → Variations.
How to Use It
Paste your existing email script
Type in or paste your current cold email script into the large text box (monospace font). Include the subject line if you have one. The script must be at least 50 characters long.
Example input:
Subject: Quick question about {{companyName}}
Hi {{firstName}},
I came across {{companyName}} while researching leaders in the B2B SaaS space.
I host a podcast called The Growth Lab where we feature founders doing innovative work.
I'd love to have you on as a guest - it's a 30-minute conversation, casual,
no prep needed.
Would you be open to a quick chat to see if it's a fit?
Best,
SarahPick the email type
Select the method that matches your original script from the dropdown:
| Type | When to pick it |
|---|---|
| Interview Method | Your script invites someone to an interview. |
| Podcast Method | Your script invites someone to a podcast. |
| AI Business Audit Method | Your script offers a business audit. |
| Masterclass Method | Your script invites someone to a masterclass. |
| Direct Method | Your script pitches a product or service directly. |
The AI uses this to understand the tone and angle when creating variations.
A helper message appears below the dropdown:
- For non-Direct methods: "Variations will differ mainly in the headline/hook" - the AI keeps your core message but rewrites the opening angle and subject line.
- For the Direct method: "Variations will include different A/B test approaches" - the AI creates structurally different versions to test different persuasion angles.
Click "Generate Variations"
The AI processes your script. You will see a "Generating Email Variations" animation. This takes 1-2 minutes.
Reading Your Results
After processing finishes, the results page shows two sections:
Original Email Script
A card at the top shows the exact script you pasted in. This lets you compare the original against the variations side by side.
Generated Variations
Below the original, a card labeled "Generated Variations (N)" shows all the new versions in tabs. Each variation has:
| Part | What it shows | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Subject line | A new subject line for this variation | Click Copy to copy it to your clipboard. |
| Body | The rewritten email body | Click Copy to copy it. |
| Personalization variables | Badges showing which {{variables}} the email uses | Same variables as your original, but the wording around them changes. |
Before and After Example
Here is what a Podcast variation might look like compared to the original:
Original:
Subject: Quick question about {{companyName}}
Hi {{firstName}}, I came across {{companyName}} while researching leaders
in the B2B SaaS space. I host a podcast called The Growth Lab...Variation 1:
Subject: {{firstName}}, your take on {{industry}} would be great for this
Hi {{firstName}}, I've been following what {{companyName}} has been doing
in the {{industry}} space and honestly, I think your perspective is one
that more people need to hear. I run a show called The Growth Lab...Variation 2:
Subject: Thought of you for something, {{firstName}}
Hi {{firstName}}, a colleague mentioned {{companyName}} when we were
talking about who's pushing the envelope in {{industry}}. I host
The Growth Lab podcast and I think our listeners would love to hear
your story...Notice how each variation keeps the same core idea (podcast invitation) but changes the hook, subject line, and tone.
Tips
- Paste your best-performing script to get variations that build on what already works.
- Try generating variations with different email types to see how the angle changes. A Podcast script run through the Interview type will feel different.
- Use variations to test different subject lines in your campaigns. Even small wording changes can affect open rates significantly.
- Generate variations from the same script multiple times - each run produces different results.
